Environmental responsibility continues to play an increasingly important role in how organisations operate, manage risk and demonstrate their commitments to customers, employees and other stakeholders.
In April 2026, the new ISO 14001:2026 Environmental Management Systems standard was officially published, replacing ISO 14001:2015 and updating the internationally recognised framework for effective environmental management.
The new edition doesn’t completely reinvent ISO 14001. Instead, it builds on the established framework while making it clearer and more relevant to the environmental challenges organisations face today.
There is stronger alignment with areas including climate change, biodiversity and resource efficiency, alongside greater emphasis on leadership, governance and managing environmental impacts throughout operations and value chains.
The revised standard also aims to be clearer and easier to navigate, while integrating more smoothly with other ISO management system standards.
Ultimately, the focus is increasingly on turning environmental commitments into meaningful and measurable results.
If your organisation is currently certified to ISO 14001:2015, the publication of the new standard doesn’t mean your existing certification suddenly becomes invalid.
Instead, organisations will transition to ISO 14001:2026 over an agreed period. This provides an opportunity to review your existing Environmental Management System, identify any gaps and consider how the updated requirements apply to your organisation.
Rather than waiting until a transition deadline approaches, starting this process early can make adapting your systems considerably easier.
ISO 14001 can provide much more than a certificate on the wall. An effective Environmental Management System can help organisations better understand resource consumption, waste, environmental risks and opportunities for improvement. It can also provide customers, suppliers and other stakeholders with confidence that environmental responsibilities are being managed through a recognised and structured framework.
With environmental expectations continuing to evolve, ISO 14001:2026 provides organisations with an opportunity to put environmental performance firmly into their wider business strategy.
